Recommendations
Netflix is offering a $1 million prize for an improved movie recommendation system, based on personal preferences:
Computer scientists say that after years of steady progress in this field, there has been a slowdown -- which is what Netflix executives say prompted them to offer the problem to a wide audience for solution.I'm not sure why, but -- for me at least -- collaborative filtering seems to produce better recommendations for movies than it does for music. The iTunes recommendations, for example, have gotten better but some of the early suggestions were hilarious. According to Apple, my purchase of a Lone Justice track meant that I was likely to enjoy to this band.
